How to Prevent Fake Signups in 2026: The Full Playbook
Detecting fake signups is half the job. Preventing them is a system — layered defenses, the right block-vs-verify decision, registration-bot handling, and monitoring. Here's the full playbook, with a checklist you can ship this week.

There's a lot written about detecting fake signups. Far less about preventing them — and they're not the same job. Detection tells you a signup is probably fake. Prevention is the whole system that makes sure a fake signup never costs you anything: the detection, plus the decision of what to do about it, plus the enforcement that catches what slipped through.

The layered defense
No single signal prevents fake signups. Any one of them is beatable; stacked together they're expensive to defeat. A complete prevention stack has five layers, each catching what the last one missed.
Layer 1 — Email. Disposable-domain detection, MX validation, role-based filtering (info@, admin@), and free-provider weighting. A disposable email is the single most common fake-signup signal; catch it first.
Layer 2 — IP. Reputation, VPN, proxy, Tor, and datacenter detection. This is where bulk fraud hides, because proxies let one attacker look like a thousand users. Datacenter IPs on a consumer signup are a near-automatic flag.
Layer 3 — Domain and velocity. For non-free email, check the domain's age and whether it has a live website. Then count how many accounts a single IP and its /24 subnet created recently — velocity is what catches registration bots that rotate emails but reuse infrastructure.
Layer 4 — Behavior. Honeypot fields, sub-second submit detection, and typing/interaction patterns. Weight these lower than you used to (AI agents fake them well now), but keep them — badly-funded bots still trip them.
Layer 5 — The decision. Fold every signal into one score and one action. This is the layer most teams skip, and it's the one that turns detection into prevention.
Turn signals into a decision: block, verify, or allow
Detection without a response policy is just a dashboard. The prevention move is to tier every signup into three actions:
- Allow — clean signals (residential IP, real email, normal behavior). Zero friction. Most of your traffic.
- Verify — ambiguous (consumer VPN, unusual-but-plausible domain, one soft flag). Send an email-verification step. This recovers legitimate users while adding real friction for bots, which can't click a link in an inbox they don't own.
- Block — near-certain fraud (datacenter IP on a known-fraud ASN, disposable email, Tor exit, high velocity). Block silently — never tell the client why, or you're handing attackers a tuning guide.
The golden rule: tighten "verify" before you ever tighten "block." A false block on a paying customer costs far more than a fake account that a later layer catches. When in doubt, verify — don't block.
Registration bots specifically
Registration bots — scripts and, increasingly, AI agents that create accounts in bulk — are the engine behind most fake-signup spikes. CAPTCHA alone will not stop them; bot farms solve CAPTCHAs for a fraction of a cent, and modern agents pass behavioral checks. What actually stops registration bots:

- Velocity limits per IP and per subnet, so rotation doesn't help.
- Behavioral traps (honeypots, timing) as a cheap secondary filter.
- Deferred value — the async layer below, which is the one bots can't wait out cheaply.
Async enforcement: prevention after signup
The most important shift in the 2026 playbook is that prevention doesn't end at account creation. Don't try to make every decision in the 1.5 seconds before the account exists. Instead:
- Score at submit. Block the obvious, allow everyone else, but create ambiguous accounts in a limited state.
- Gate the features that actually cost you money — LLM credits, bulk operations, outbound email — for the first 24–48 hours.
- Run async checks in that window: did they verify email? Log in from a stable device? Actually use the product?
- Lift the limits when checks pass; suspend silently when they fail.
This is what makes prevention robust. A bot would have to keep an account warm for two days with realistic behavior before it can extract anything — friction that breaks the unit economics of automated abuse without touching a single legitimate user.
Monitoring: know your prevention is working
You can't tune what you don't measure. Log every decision with the (hashed) IP, the score, the reasons that fired, and your action. Then watch four numbers:
- Block rate — should be a small, stable single-digit percentage. A sudden spike means either an attack or an over-tight threshold.
- Verify-to-completion rate — what fraction of "verify" signups finish email verification. Low completion on legitimate-looking traffic means your friction is too heavy.
- Support tickets about locked accounts — the canary for false positives. Rising tickets = loosen "block" toward "verify."
- Trial-to-paid by signup source — if a segment converts near zero and is a big share of signups, that's an unblocked fraud cluster.
The prevention checklist
Ship these in order; each one closes a gap:
- Reject disposable emails and validate MX at signup.
- Score the signup IP for VPN, proxy, Tor, and datacenter.
- Check domain age and live MX for non-free email providers.
- Add per-IP and per-/24 velocity counters.
- Add a honeypot field and a sub-second-submit check.
- Fold all signals into one score with a block / verify / allow policy.
- Send the "verify" tier to email confirmation; block the worst silently.
- Gate expensive features for new accounts for 24–48 hours.
- Run async post-signup checks and lift limits on pass.
